In the novel Faith and the Beloved, Kochery C Shibu is aiming to portray the value systems of individuals and to what extent the individuals are willing to go to protect their loved ones.
As I was reading the novel, it is this theme that stood out to me most. As the title itself suggests, Faith or what one believes in will dictate your behaviour. Protecting your loved ones is part and parcel of Indian culture as it is illustrated through the novel’s timeline.
The characters are grey and their deeds seem questionable at times. The reader is left to ponder regarding the nature of the actions of the protagonists and how it relates in the society. Are the actions of the protagonists justifying crime in the name of protecting their loved ones?
Even though the novel is a historical thriller, it does highlight the all-pervasive casteism that we are still struggling with.
Advisory
The crime thriller mystery novel is for mature adult readers. It contains graphic descriptions which may not suit all. Reader discretion is advised.
